La Doublure

"The Valet" is a quirky French film that operates on a slightly convoluted, unlikely premise.

The story revolves around a paparazzi photograph taken of billionaire Pierre Levasseur (Daniel Auteuil) and his mistress, supermodel of the moment Elena (Alice Taglioni). Stricken that his wife (Kristin Scott Thomas) will find out about his affair Levasseur enlists his lawyer to construct an alternative truth.

Francois Pignon (Gad Elmaleh) is a valet driver. The object of his affections is Emilie (Virginie Ledoyen), an earnest bookshop owner. Pignon's affections are unrequited and he seems to have limited prospects. Following Emilie's rejection of his proposal of marriage Pignon wanders the streets of Paris feeling miserable. A swarm of paparazzi rush by and snap a photo of Elena and Levasseur. Pignon is the third person in the image, a chance occurrence that colours the rest of the film.

In order to convince his wife of his innocence wealthy Levasseur persuades socially awkward Pignon and famous Elena to live together and pose as a couple for two weeks. This improbable situation creates some amusing scenarios.

Despite the obvious unlikelihood of the plot, and a tendency toward over earnestness, "The Valet" is largely enjoyable in a fluffy way. The jokes don't translate to English all that successfully, but it is light-hearted nonetheless. There is nothing new here, but this is a likable, photogenic film.
